The newest addition to the Peel Summer Academy line up takes the campers to beautiful British Columbia! They will be staying on Vancouver Island at the University of Victoria, famous for its “West Coast” and unique educational experience. The students participate in a program schedule developed by the university. They spend their first week executing hands-on activities and academic-based courses at the University of Victoria. During the second week, students travel to Pearson College daily and participate in workshops related to marine and aquatic life unique to the West coast and take in presentations by faculty and staff. In addition to participating in the academic programs at the University of Victoria and Pearson College, they will have the opportunity to view the killer whales in the Juan de Fuca, visit the Ocean Discovery Centre in Sidney, discover the Royal BC Museum and take in an IMAX film as well as absorb the sites in and around Victoria.

Courses

Students will learn and explore the special culture of Canada's West coast, from the taking in presentations by aboriginal elders as well as learn about the unique marine species that call BC their home. They spend the first week at the University of Victoria and take part in hands-on activities and workshops that will focus on the following areas:

  • Indigenous Ways of Knowing

  • Sustainability & the Environment

  • Science, Technology & Health

  • Music, Thatre, Film & Visual Art

  • Humanities

In the second week, students travel daily to Pearson College and participate in a unique program that will incorporate a variety of learning experiences, from introduction to scuba, kayaking, marine biology, hiking, and astronomy. 

 

Recreation

Excellent recreational facilities on campus include an indoor swimming pool, basketball courts, softball diamonds and soccer fields.

Local cultural activities will include walking tours of Victoria, study of local architecture and marine ecology, folk festivals, museums, and bird and whale watching.

 

Accommodation

Students live in residence in single or double rooms on the University campus and will be supervised by Peel Summer Academy staff who will travel from Toronto with them and supervise throught the duration of the prgram.

 

Fee for 2010:

$3039.12 (HST included)

The fee includes registration, return air transportation from Toronto Pearson International Airport, ground transportation in Victoria, university residence accommodation, daily meals, instruction, supervision, and scheduled activities. Students may require some personal spending money for souvenirs and free time.
